
It's hot, the town is quiet, the students are home, the faculty is on vacation, and its a perfect time for the college to go for their demolition permits, break some eggs and do controversial things.
The Director of Media Relations at Smith, Kristen Cole, bridled a bit when I put down my reporter's notebook and made this observation.
"Is this a question?" she asked.

That is the most absurd thing to knock down this gorgeous building for grass! Unbelievable to think at 1 time many many years ago my grt grandfather was a city counselman here, along with owning a huge farm in Whately & worked in a very large silk/hoisery factory.My grandfather in the 1930s was a girl's basket ball coach that took them to the state nationals. They didn't win but.... & here I live in a shrimpy 2 room apt on Hospital Hill ( Hillside Apts)paying more than I did in a Bigger apt with more heat. Nice welcome home???? Ugh. So crooked. To think our late President Calvin Coolidge was born & raised here. By the way Andrea Pichette quickly resigned from Hilltop/Hillside Apts for who knows what reason???
